I frowned when he ignored me. "Let me show you around here, Meg." I said, taking her hand. " Gracias!" she gasped, quite surprised. After the tour, it was time to go. "Muchisimas Gracias!" she said. I patted her head. "Haste Last Vista, Meg!" I shouted as I walked away. "Adios, Musa!" she called back, waving as she walked into the sunset.

PostSubject: Lesson 3   Sat Oct 11, 2014 7:24 am

Lesson 3: How are you?

Politely ask "¿Cómo está usted?" This question translates literally into “How are you?”

  • Cómo means “how.”

  • Está is the third person singular conjugation of the verb “estar,” meaning “to be” in a temporary sense. Note that you would not use the “to be” verb “ser,” since “ser” implies a permanent condition.

  • Usted is a third person singular noun meaning “you.” It is considered a formal way of addressing someone, so you should use it with anyone you do not know well. You could also drop usted from this question and the statement will still mean the same thing.

  • Pronounce this question as koh-moh ehs-tah oos-tehd.

Ask a friend "¿Cómo estás?" This question also translates directly into “How are you?”

  • Estás is the second person singular conjugation of estar, and it is used with the “you” pronoun “tú.” This conjugation should only be used for someone that you are on familiar terms with, like a relative or friend.
  • The pronunciation of this question would be koh-moh ehs-tahs.

Say "¿Cómo te va?" Translated literally, this question asks, "How are you going?"

  • The question can be interpretted as either "How are you doing?" or "How's it going?"
  • Te is a direct object pronoun meaning "you" in the informal singular sense.
  • Va is a conjugated form of the verb "ir," meaning "to go."
  • A general pronunciation of this question is koh-moh tay vah.

Ask how someone feels with "¿Cómo se siente?" This question literally means "How do you feel?" or "How are you feeling?"

  • Se is a direct object pronoun. It can be used for the third person "him" or "her," or it can be used for the polite form of "you."
  • Siente is the third person singular conjugation of the verb "sentir," meaning "to feel."
  • Pronounce this question as koh-moh say see-en-tay.
  • For someone you are familiar with, you could use "¿Cómo te sientes?" instead.

Use "¿Cómo van las cosas?" Translated literally, this question asks, “How are things going?”

  • Cómo means "how" and "van" is a conjugated form of the verb "ir," meaning "to go."
  • "Las cosas" means "the things." When translating the question into English, though, you would drop the word "the."
  • Pronounce this question as koh-moh bahn lahs koh-sahs.

Ask "¿Cómo andas?" While a little less common, this is another question that loosely translates into “How are you doing?”

  • Translated literally, this phrase actually asks “How are you walking?”
  • Andas is a second person singular conjugation of the verb “andar,” meaning “to walk.” Since this verb is conjugated in the informal “you” tense, you would only ask this question to someone you are familiar with.
  • The pronunciation of this phrase is koh-moh ahn-dahs.

Try asking "¿Qué pasa?" This is an informal way of asking someone how they are and is equivalent to the English, "What's up?"

  • Translated more literally, it means "What is passing?" or "What is going on?"
  • Qué means "what."
  • Pasa is the third person singular conjugated form of the verb "pasar," meaning "to pass" or "to go."
  • Note that the third person conjugation refers to an inanimate "it" rather than the polite "you" form, "usted." As such, this phrase is still considered informal.
  • A general pronunciation of this phrase would be kay pah-sah.

Switch to "¿Qué tal?" This is another question that could be interpretted as "What's up" or "How are things?"

  • The literal translation of this question is somewhat clumsy to a native English speaker. Qué means "what" and tal means "such," so a literal translation would be "what such?"
  • Pronounce this question as kay tahl.

Homework:
Our lesson's homework is similar to the previous one, except you'll write a detailed paragraph with at least 75 words containing these spanish phrases.

"Hola!" I yelled at Meg. She looked up from her book, startled. "¿Cómo estás?" I asked, running over. "I'm fine. Thank you. ¿Cómo está usted?" she smiled politely. "I'm fine too!" I laughed. Then, I became serious. " Meg, what's this book about?" I asked. She turned red.Embarassed "Uh... Fairies. Why?" she said, still red. I noticed her eyes glowed red too.

"Meg, I called you 5 times just now. I need to know what book it is."

"Musa, it's a book of fairies!"

I snatched the book from her hands. "HEY!" Meg cried. "I'm sorry, estimado, but this is not a book of fairies." I said, flipping through the pages. "It is! IT IS!" Meg shouted, trying to snatch the book from me. But I had gone off, deep in thought.

"Master Shinzo!¿Cómo andas?" I called to my former meditation master. He turned & his face broke into a very rare smile. " Haha, fine, fine." he laughed. "¿Cómo van las cosas?" I asked, clutching the "book of fairies" tightly.

"I sense dark magic. What's that?"

"My friend Meg said it is a book of fairies, but I don't see anything."

He looked through the book & dropped it. I caught it quickly. he rubbed his eyes, which were red.

" This, young grasshopper, is a book of black magic. Meg sees fairies because they make your dreams come true. Meg always wanted to see fairies, so here, she sees them."

"How do I stop it?"

"Throw it into the flame of the dragon."

I panicked.

"W-Won't the dragon...Eat me?"

"Find the Green Dragon. He will like you. Tell him I sent you to burn this book." He pointed at the "book of fairies".

I wandered into the Bellwood & wondered why they didn't call it "Dragon Woods" instead. The book was bounded tightly with 15 steel straps, covered with a lot of paper with spiritual Chinese words on it. I gulped. I stood in front of a huge, tall cave & it was the home of the Green dragon.

"E-Excuse M-M-Me? Is the G-G-Green D-Drag-gon i-i-i-n?" I couldn't help stammering!

A huge snout poked out of the cave. "What do you want?" bellowed the Green Dragon. I nearly wet myself.

"M-Master Shinzo s-s-sent m-me here t-t-t-to let you b-b-burn this book." I stammered, dropping the book.

Suddenly, the dragon smiled. "Master Shinzo,eh? Okay!" he took a deep breath as I dropped the book again. I squealed & dived behind a rock. The Green Dragon blew green flames onto the book. It caught fire & I watched as black smoke rose into the air.

When the fire blew out, there were only ashes left. The Green Dragon told the North Wind to blow the ashes into the furthest sea in the World. " Bye bye!" cooed the Green Dragon as I went off. I waved politely.

After the whole thing was over, I saw Meg. "Meg! ¿Cómo se siente?" I yelled. "Musa! I'm wonderful! Qué tal?" she said. My mind raced. Should I tell her the truth?

Nah...I'll keep it to myself. "The sky is up." I replied.

PostSubject: Lesson 4   Fri Mar 20, 2015 11:24 am

Hi everyone, I now feature the first lesson of our second chapter. This lesson features a conversation, with a question and an answer.

Habla usted espaniol?
Do you speak Spanish?

Habla/Hablo
Speak

Usted
You

Espaniol
Spanish

Usted es
You are

As you can see, there is are only three words in the underlined sentence. There is no exactly word for "do." That is because there is no Spanish word for "do." Instead of adding the word "do" when you're asking a question, they just place the verb in front of the subject. The underlined word literally translates to "you speak Spanish?".
How to answer this question? It's either no or yes, but if you'd like, we could add some more words.

No, yo no hablo espaniol.
No, I don't speak Spanish.

Si, yo hablo espaniol.
Yes, I speak Spanish.

The word "hablo" in our underlined question changes into "habla." That is because when we put "hablo" after, before, or in a sentence that has the word "you" changes into "habla." Now, let us move to the word "understand."

Entendie usted espaniol?
Do you understand Spanish?

Si/No, yo (no) entendio espaniol.
Yes/No, I (don't) understand Spanish.

Entendio or understand changes to entendie when we put it before, after, or in a sentence that has the word "you," just like the word "hablo."
What if you only speak Spanish a little? You'll have to say "un poco" if you speak Spanish a little or "un poquito" if you speak Spanish a little bit.

Yo hablo un poco/un poquito de espaniol.
I speak Spanish a little(bit).

It literally translates to "I speak a little bit of Spanish" since "de" means "of" in English.

If you are going to say "I am Caramel" for example, you'll have to say "yo soy Caramel" for "soy" is "am" in Spanish.

Home Work

Memorize the sentences/phrases then imaging you're going to translate English to Spanish for your friend. Then, you have to translate it in English for your other friend. Then, you'll tell your friend that you only speak Spanish a little.

F#1: Hola, I am Caramel! Do you understand english?
Translation:

F#2: Hola, Caramel. Yo no entendio ingles.
Translation:

You: I speak Spanish a little...
Translation:

Translation: Hola, yo soy Caramel. Habla usted espaniol?

F#2: Hola, Caramel. Yo no entendio ingles.

Translation: Hello Caramel. I don't understand English.

You: I speak Spanish a little...

Translation: Yo hablo un poco...

Cool, cool... Now here's you assignment:

  1. Give me at least 10 consecutive letters of the Spanish alphabet.
  2. Is there a difference between the pronunciation of the letter "s" and "c" in Spanish? If so, what is it?
  3. Can you tell me how to pronounce the "ch" and "ll"?

2 points each number.Ban

I think "C" is pronounced as "si." But, that "se" is still acceptable, so you got Clapping !
